    Treatments

    Studied treatment Captopril initial dose of 50 mg daily given in one or two doses
    Control treatment thiazide diuretic or beta-blocker
    initial dose of atenolol and metoprolol of 50�100 mg once daily. Hydrochlorothiazide was given as 25 mg once daily, and bendrofluazide as 2�5 mg once daily
